Pride and Prejudice: my review

Finished book review by: Ben

Book written by: Jane Austen
Total number of pages: 432

Genre: Romance
My rating: ****, really liked it

A brief summary of my book:
The book begins with the introduction of Mr. Bingley, a well-off bachelor, of whom Mrs. Bennet desires to marry off one of her daughters. Directly after this follows a ball, in which Mr. Bingley’s friend, Mr. Darcy, is also introduced; though reportedly twice as wealthy, his manner is haughty and aloof, and causes the townspeople to have a general dislike of Mr. Darcy, though Mr. Darcy begins to become attracted to Elizabeth, the protagonist of the novel. Eventually Mr. Wickham is also introduced, who tells Elizabeth that he was deprived of his inheritance by the doings of Mr. Darcy, and Elizabeth’s dislike of Darcy is confirmed at this point. The stage is thus set, and various romances and marriages occur from then on.

What I thought about this book:
Though very well-written and enjoyable, I absolutely detest the society in which this is set, and given this society also disapprove of many of the actions of the characters that the book itself seems to have implicit approval of. Generally, I find that certain aspects of realism are ignored to present a more idealistic picture of romance, and that were these aspects to be presented, certain characters would be painted in somewhat of an unfavorable light given the premise.
